Insomniac Games Stormland for Oculus playable at Gamescom 2018

Stormland PSVR

Stormland for Oculus is a game that is set in a futuristic Dystopian land. After an event called the tempest, the player characters android body was shattered. (and presumably other androids as well) This leads us to traverse the forgotten ruins with makeshift weapons navigating the ever-changing cloudscape. Stormland for Oculus is the first virtual reality game that looks as good as it does with gameplay aspects akin to a proper RPG.

This E3 trailer shows just how appealing this game looks.

Mark your calendars because Stormland for Oculus is coming to Gamescom 2018 with a complete playable demo! You can find the link to the facebook event here. This might end up being a genuinely impressive VR game.

The First Open World VR Game?

Stormland is said to have an Open World rather than traditional VR games which set you on a defined path. With little to no exploration which is why players have always considered that VR games are “not there yet”. But this game looks like it is out on a mission to change exactly that. The game undeniably looks gorgeous from the trailer.

Insomniac Games have gone on record to say that Breath of the Wild was a massive influence for this. Do we currently have the hardware to host Open World VR games like this? Could this be the push that VR games need to enter the mainstream AAA market? Only time will tell.

But one thing is certain, we would love to walk the beautiful world of Stormland. The key to making an open world game work is how interactive and how involved it makes you feel. VR games face a higher challenge to that because we haven’t quite figured out how that would fit into the control scheme without breaking the VR immersion. Let’s all hope this game is the one to figure it out.
