Microsoft’s Next OS is called Windows 10, Coming later Next Year

Windows 10

Microsoft’s next major Operating System is here and it is called Windows 10. Yes Microsoft skipped Windows 9 this time. Microsoft announced the official name for next Windows today between about 50 reporters instead of announcing it in front of thousands of people.

According to Microsoft, Windows 10 is the most comprehensive platform ever. Windows 10 is unified Operating System. Which means it will run on multiple devices  from “Internet of things” to “servers in enterprise data centers”. Here is how Microsoft explained about Windows 10:
“Windows 10 will run across an incredibly broad set of devices – from the Internet of Things, to servers in enterprise datacenters worldwide. Some of these devices have 4 inch screens – some have 80 inch screens – and some don’t have screens at all. Some of these devices you hold in your hand, others are ten feet away. Some of these devices you primarily use touch/pen, others mouse/keyboard, others controller/gesture – and some devices can switch between input types.”

Windows 10 is somewhat looks like Windows 7. As Microsoft knows that hundreds of millions of users are still using Windows 7 and they want them to shift on new Windows 10. As shifting from Windows 7 to totally unfamiliar Windows 8 is still difficult for some users.

“We want all these Windows 7 users to have the sentiment that yesterday they were driving a first-generation Prius, and now with Windows 10 it’s like a Tesla.”

Windows 10 has a new task view which will make multitasking a lot easier. Task view is shown in the picture below:

Windows 10-2Users with keyboard and mouse can feel more relaxed now. Modern Metro apps can now be run in Windowed mode and Start Screen is gone. And now up to 4 apps ca be run simultaneously. All the tiles that appears in the start menu can be re sized as well. New start menu is the mixture of old classic and new apps.

The charm bar from Windows 8 is not gone as some rumors suggested. It is still there and some other features from Windows 8 are still there. Microsoft also introduced a new feature called Continuum. This switches the UI based on touch or keyboard input. It will be useful if you get a touchscreen tablet which can be converted into laptop to use with keyboard and mouse. Hence “Windows 10 will deliver the right experience on the right device at the right time,”

Windows 10 will be coming later in 2015. Most probably it will come somewhere in the middle of next year. However as a part of Windows Insider Program, PC experts and IT Pros can get access to a technical preview of Windows 10 tomorrow.
