With the release of Atmosphère 0.8.8 for Switch, we see support for firmware 8.0.0, the latest firmware released by Nintendo. Atmosphere is a Custom Firmware (CFW) that allows homebrew, emulation, and other exciting opportunities for modifying your Nintendo Switch.
What does Atmosphere do?
As a CFW, Atmosphere allows users to do a number of features that are otherwise not possible on the system. Features like watching videos from the SD card, using a web browser, overclocking your Switch, making custom themes on the system, and more!
All of the above features are currently not supported by Nintendo, or at least aren’t options as of FW 8.0.0. alongside giving the Switch more functions and features, the CFW allows users to run a variety of emulators and homebrew games. You can emulate PSP, PS1, N64, SNES, and other popular older consoles along with their games using RetroArch and other built-in emulators in the CFW.
There is also room for game modding on the system, as it allows you to have fun with your games on the system.
What does Atmosphere 0.8.8 bring?
Unfortunately, outside of support for Nintendo’s firmware 8.0.0, the new CFW doesn’t offer many new features. It does, however, offer a variety of patches and fixes with previous versions of the CFW.
You should keep in mind that software or hardware modding your Nintendo Switch leaves it open for Nintendo to levy the banhammer on your account and/or your system. Console manufacturers don’t take too kindly toward consumers tinkering with their hardware or software.
This has been as early as the Xbox 360, PS3 and the Nintendo Wii. Where each respective console company would indiscriminately permanently ban accounts that would run modified consoles.
Downloading and installing Atmosphere 0.8.8 is not that difficult, however, you will need to make sure you have a system that can have the fusee-gelee hardware exploit run on it. This was a vulnerability discovered in the launch and onward models of the Nintendo Switch and was capable due to a weakness in the Nvidia Tegra chip present in the system.
