NOTE: The steps which you’re going to follow down below need to be performed after every update of Sea of Thieves as the Sea of Thieves version number changes with every update. Without further delay here’s what you need to do to fix Sea of Thieves crash on launch/rendering error and also using Trend Micro antivirus:

  • Press the Windows Key on your keyboard.
  • Search for Windows PowerShell and open it
  • Enter the below command
Get-AppxPackage *SeaOfThieves* | ForEach{$_.InstallLocation}
  • Copy the result, it should look similar to below.
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_2.78.5523.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
  • Open the Trend Micro main console by right-clicking on the Trend Micro icon in your taskbar and selecting Open the Main Console.
  • Open the Settings Menu
  • Select Exception Lists and then Programs/folders
  • Click the + Add button and then Browse
  • Paste the results after entering the command in the 4th step into the File name box
  • Click the Open button, this will add the path your Exception List
  • Click Apply then OK to save your changes & close the Exception Lists window

  • Open the main console on your Trend Micro Security software then click the Security Report icon.
  • Click See more details link.
  • Click the SoTGame.exe file and click Restore. (If you can’t see the file select the dropdown next to View and select Last Scan)
  • Click Yes when asked if you want to restore the file.
  • Click OK.
