Beyond is a Steel Sky is a cyberpunk sci-fi adventure game developed and published by Revolution Software. The game is developed in Unreal Engine 4. It was first released for Apple Arcade on 26 June 2020 and the Steam version was released on 16 July 2020. The game received positive reception on release and there aren’t many issues and crashes faced by the players. There are, however, some issues here and there like unable to launch. Beyond a Steel Sky not launching issues can be resolved with a few workarounds.

The workaround is very straight forward and you will resolve the issue in no time. You will have to copy and paste a system.dll file which is the cause of the issue. If when launched from Steam, you get the Missing Xinput1_4.dll prompt, you will have to copy the system file into the game’s directory.

Before getting to the fix itself, make sure your system requirements meets the minimum or recommended requirements. Sometime the game doesn’t launch if the CPU or the GPU is too weak to run the game. Here are the official system requirements for Beyond a Steel Sky:

  • Memory: 4 GB RAM

  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 20 GB available space

Recommended

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 3470, (3.20 Ghz) or AMD FX-8350, (4.00 Ghz)
  • Memory: 6 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB or AMD Radeon R9 280X 3GB
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 20 GB available space

The Fix

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Open This Computer from your desktop
  • Open the drive where Windows is installed, usually, it is Local Disc C
  • Find and open the System32 folder.
  • Locate the Xinput1_3.dll file and copy it.
  • Paste the Xinput1_3.dll file to the desktop.
  • Rename the file to Xinput1_4.dll.
  • Locate the Beyond a Steel Sky folder and copy-paste the file. The game could be located in:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common
