Square Enix is one of the most prominent publishers at the moment. With infamous franchises, such as Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy, under their belt, the company continues to expand to conquer the industry with unique AAA titles. In March, Square Enix announced a few new titles, such as Forespoken (Project Athia), and some sequels to their previous franchises, such as Life Is Strange: True Colours. Recently, the company registered a new trademark by the name “The Forsaken Maiden” in Europe.
Square Enix has already a few releases in 2021 and 2022. However, The Forsaken Maiden is a completely new instalment that the company hasn’t yet announced. On 18th March, the company announced Forspoken, a new narrative-driven adventure title. We don’t know much about it so far, since it’s completely new. However, we can assume that “The Forsaken Maiden” is perhaps a sequel already in the works.
Another speculation that a few people have is that this could just be a mobile title that Square Enix may be working on. As of recently, we’ve seen many developers, such as Activision and Riot Games, porting their franchises to mobile. With the mobile gaming industry becoming so widespread over the years, it makes sense that Square Enix would want a piece of the action. Not to mention, Square Enix has already ported a lot of its franchises onto mobile. However, we’ve yet to receive an exclusive mobile title from the company.
Another obvious speculation would be that The Forsaken Maiden is a standalone AAA title from Square Enix. The company has released a bunch of sequels to their already notorious franchises over the years. They took a chance with a standalone AAA title and released Marvel’s Avengers. However, it failed miserably! Perhaps Square Enix wants to redeem itself with this one.
Unfortunately, we can’t be certain about what this new trademark means yet. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from Square Enix itself. Until then, we have our eyes on Forspoken! This is the company’s chance at redemption after the disaster that their recent standalone release was.
