Mafia 2: Definitive Edition is now available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. This is a remastered release of the original that came out in 2010. Despite being a free update for existing owners, the definitive edition does have some problems. Players have reported a lack of Physx in this release when compared to the original. Here’s how you can enable PhysX in Mafia 2: Definitive Edition.

PhysX is an interesting realtime physics engine middleware by NVIDIA that adds another layer of graphical flair to titles. Mafia 2 originally used it to simulate cloth physics, but for some reason isn’t available in this version.

Enable PhysX in Mafia 2: Definitive Edition

To enable PhysX, follow the steps below.

  • Head over to the following location
Documents\My Games\Mafia II Definitive Edition\Data\profiles\<ProfileID>
  • First, right-click on the settings.xml file, and open its properties.
  • Make sure the “read-only” option has been checked, as shown below. This ensures that the settings aren’t overridden when you launch the game again.
  • Now, open the file using any text editor like Notepad
  • Here, find the following
<Apex>0</Apex>
  • Change the value from 0 to 1 for Medium and 2 for High. These are values for PhysX quality in-game
  • Save the file and exit

Next time you run the game, you will notice subtle graphical changes that were introduced with PhysX.
